Blindness is an affliction which everyone dreads. But if you are a diabetic then it is a real fear, as diabetes in one of the leading causes of blindness in the US. In fact every one in three cases of blindness is caused by diabetes.

Therefore it is absolutely essential to have an eye exam at least once a year, this is if you are controlling your diabetes. If it is not controlled then the exam should take place between 3 and 6 months intervals.

Glaucoma is the main culprit, but diabetics also have a high risk of the development of cataracts and retinopathy. It is so important to detect these diseases at an early stage. Therefore make sure that the eye exams are carried out at exactly the recommended intervals, you owe it to yourself. Diabetes is not a desired state but blindness is a lot worse!

Earlier this year it was reported that 6 new genes had been found which could make people more likely to develop diabetes. The conclusion was that this could help to treat diabetes and possibly prevent it.

There are now sixteen genes which are possibly linked to the development of Type 2 Diabetes. These all have significance on the control of blood sugar and how that control can go wrong.

“These genes are all brand new finds” claimed one of the researchers at Oxford University. He went on to state that each gene could provide opportunities to dicover new treatments or cures.

In diabetes the blood sugar levels are raised which if untreated can go on to damage kidneys, eyes, and then develop heart problems, strokes and circulation problems in the extremities.

Over 90% of all diabetes sufferers have type 2 diabetes, obesity is closely associated.

Not everyone has all the six genes found, but if they are all found in one person their propensity to develop diabetes is 2 to 3 more likely to develop the disease.

A surprise was the discovery of a Gene named jazf1, this is also known to play a part in the development of prostate cancer! A double whammy!!

Many men, women and children are diabetic and if they do not take measures to control blood sugar levels, complications can arise. For the majority diagnosed with this condition it can be reversed with a type 2-diabetes diet, exercise plus medication, if necessary.

Type 2 is the most widespread type of diabetes mellitus. It occurs when the body does not make enough insulin or the cells can’t use the insulin. When you eat food, sugars and starches are broken down into glucose. Insulin transports the sugar from the blood into the cells. If glucose builds up in the blood instead, it can cause your cells to lack energy, and overtime this can affect your health and may damage your kidneys and lead to renal failure, or affect your heart, nerves, or eyes.

There are many websites, and books where you can find recommendations for a type 2 diabetes diet.

The American Diabetes association has a brilliant website which contains guidelines, tips and diet information for type 2 diabetes and they also publish many books for any patient who needs help controlling diabetes. They say it is particularly important to control blood cholesterol and weight with low cholesterol, low -saturated-fat diet, and that you will benefit if you take regular aerobic exercise, don’t smoke and you should lower high blood pressure.

On this website you will also find:

A typical diet menu for type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes diet product information

12-week program for diabetics

Sign up for monthly newsletter to receive menu and recipe suggestions.

A review of recommended books containing type 2 diabetes diet health plan, weight loss plans, plus sample recipes from each book.

Expert articles on how to plan a diabetic meal and many other topics of interest

Testimonials and personal stories

Being diabetic doesn’t necessarily mean you will have to take a drug or pills as treatment, and give up all the foods that you like. Although there is no need to eat special diets, you can’t have it all your own way if you have this complaint, or are a borderline diabetesit and you need to make certain lifestyle changes.

Diet for type 2 diabetes from American Heart Assn recommends good nutrition and measuring the amount of carbohydrate in your daily diet.

Carbohydrates are found in a vast number of everyday foods including sugar, fructose, bread, pasta, cereals, beans, vegtables, rice and other grains. The more carbohydrates you eat, the higher your blood glucose will be. Carb control for a type 2 diabetes diet is easier if you measure your food and read nutrition fact labels, and exchange lists.

The Mayo Clinic website is another well worth a visit.

Atkins diet and the type 2 diabetic, and the South Beach Diet are all used to achieve weight loss and there is an article in the Los Angeles Times available online, which compares low-fat and high-protein diets.

Research is always looking for a risk free product, new therapy and ways to prevent diabetes. Breakthroughs are happening all the time. Scientists at a Canadian clinic researching children with type1 diabetes found evidence to suggest that the nervous system is one of the factors which helps trigger diabetes, consequently when they injected diabetic mice with something to offset the faulty pain neurons in the pancreas they became healthy overnight.

The National Centre of Homeopathy (homopathic assn) reports in one of its articles that a study to weigh up the association between alternative and complementary medicine in prevention and in conventional medical services in adults with diabetes found that it may not be a barrier to treatment.

If you are on a Type 2-diabetes diet you might not have to use insulin as well, but if you do you many be interested that scientists have been working on making a patch that uses ultrasound waves, electrical currents, and chemicals to help transport insulin transdermally, but it may be sometime before they are available in pharmacies.

Numerous studies have shown that the incidence of diabetes mellitus is on the rise, especially among younger adults, which leads many people to ask, “what causes diabetes?”

Diabetes and the causes are not obvious, and scientists are still unable to say why some suffer from diabetes, whilst other people do not. However it is known that there are certain risk factors, for example, if you come from a family of diabetics, then you are more prone to develop it yourself.
Rather than looking at what the causes of diabetes are, I would first like to dispel some myths, and say that eating too much sugar is not a cause, but it can cause obesity, which is associated with what causes type 2 diabetes.

Stress, again does not cause diabetes, but may act as a trigger, and does worsen the symptoms in existing diabetics. Lastly, diabetes is not contagious, so you can’t get it from anyone else.

Diabetes insipidus is a rare disorder, which is characterized by excessive thirst (and excessive urination. It is not related to diabetes where the body the body does not make or properly use insulin.

The causes of diabetes insipidus are a total or partial deficiency of the Arginine, protein, Vasopressin that is needed by the kidneys to balance the water in the body. It can cause dehydration, and show more serious symptoms, such as confusion, and changes in consciousness.

If you are wondering what causes itching and burning in a diabetic, then you may be interested to know that almost a third of people with diabetes will get skin disorders.
Itching can be caused by dry skin, poor blood flow, or a yeast infection. It may even be an allergic reaction to anti-hyperglycemic pills, or your insulin. People with diabetes are also more likely to suffer from bacterial infections. Using a natural skin lotion will help prevent this type of itching.

What causes diabetes type1?

The body produces insulin in the beta cells in the pancreas.

The causes of type 1 diabetes are because the body destroys the beta cells, but it known why this happens.

The causes of diabetes mellitus type 1 are not linked to obesity, as with type 2. This condition generally starts in young children, and teenagers, which is why it is known as juvenile diabetes.

The causes of type 2 diabetes mellitus are generally a poor diet, obesity, and lack of exercise, which may produce insulin resistance. With these causes, diabetes 2 natural treatment will involve eating foods with a low Glycemic index- simple carbohydrates, high in fiber, low fat and moderate protein. This lowers the blood sugar and may also help you lose weight.

What causes diabetes during pregnancy?

Gestational diabetes causes are the increase levels of hormones that are made in the placenta, which leads to glucose intolerance.
It is surprising that although many doctors know about these causes diabetes, natural treatment in the form of nutritional supplements is rarely recommended. Yet there are numerous supplements with published studies backing their efficacy at lowering insulin and blood sugar levels. Now you know what causes diabetes, isn’t it fortunate that a prescription is not required for a natural treatment.

Diabetes supplies are essential to the diabetic, and insulin is usually the main treatment, as it makes it possible for your body to use glucose. Various types of insulin act differently, so your supplies will be tailored according to your needs, by your diabetes care team. Both the dosage and the type of insulin can be changed if necessary.

Diabetic supplies of insulin may come in the form of vials, pre-filled pens, or cartridges. Pre-filled pens are useful if you have visual, or dexterity problems. The cartridges are used with pen injectors, and the vials with syringes.

Diabetes supplies of insulin may be rapid, long, short, or medium acting, and there are mixtures of these. Diabetic insulin supplies can also be taken orally.

If you are a diabetic, you will probably need to monitor your blood glucose levels regularly, which requires you to have a glucose meter and test strips. This can be expensive unless you have free diabetes testing supplies.

If you are diabetic, you may be able to receive totally free diabetic testing supplies delivered to your door. This is possible because a diabetic medical supplies company will work together with your health insurance.

If in doubt, check with your medical health insurance provider to see if you qualify for free diabetic testing supplies, or other totally free diabetic supplies. For example, you will find that Medicare Part B does not cover you for insulin, but does for testing.
The Foundation for Diabetes Education offers free diabetes testing supplies. You only have to fill in a form to see if you are eligible, and they will source funding from your insurance, or there may be a government- program that can help you out.

You may be interested to know that can access diabetes medical supplies online. A good place to start is the Bayer website. It is has a wealth of information on diabetes.
Bayer diabetic supplies supply a variety of tools including lancing devices, meters that use no coding technology, and a patented test strip that enable your meter to be automatically coded.
You can apply for your free diabetic supplies if you have Medicare, or buy discount diabetic supplies.

Other diabetic supplies online, include:

Glucose test Strips

Testing accessories

Glucose Monitor

Urinalysis Test

Diabetic Foot Care

nutritional and diabetic food

Needles/syringes/pumps

If you don’t like to get your diabetic supplies online, then you will find that some pharmacies will offer a free meter to their customers on the provisions that you buy the rest of your testing supplies from them.

Just like humans, our pets need access to proper health care, diabetes supplies for your pet is a major concern, as we all want our pets to be healthy, and remain active.
If you are looking for pet diabetic supplies, you will be able to find all that you need online. There are even wholesalers offering a discount, which will help you keep the cost of supplies, as low as possible.
Most of these stores sell an extensive range of both prescription, and non-prescription medicines for dogs and cats at very competitive prices, so diabetes supplies need never be a problem.

Type 2 diabetes drugs need more extensive drug safety reviews say the FDA. This is aimed principally at those drugs which may cause heart problems.

The panel which mainly had experts from outside the FDA voted 14 to 2 to ensure that all type 2 diabetes drugs producers carry out longer period cardio trials, in all cases.

This should also be carried out prior to approval and could be part of a stage 3 trial aimed at reducing any heart risks.

Much of the reasons for this have come about after Avandia (rosiglitazone) was approved in 1999 and then attracted a warning about increased risk of heart disease. The FDA kept the drug on the market as they concluded the risk was no higher than with other similar drugs.

Critics of the FDA point to the Canadian Health Association - Health Canada who gave much stricter warnings with clearer wording.

Finally a study back in 2007 which was pulished in the New England Journal of Medicine found 43 % increase in cardio risks for those using Avandia.

In conclusion Dr Steven Nissen said it all when he told the FDA panel that “merely reducing blood sugar levels is too simple, it’s the complications we have to watch out for”

The latest figures from various health reports show that Australia comes 2nd to Scandinavia for new cases of diabetes Type One.

Even more worrying the figues show that 3 % more children are now diagnosed each year.

In 2000 there were nearly eight hundred new cases but in 2006 there over nine hundred new cases. This was for the 0 - 14 age group.

For the over 15’s there were around 9000 new cases for type one diabetes but these figures were relatively stable.

For the older age groups the rates actually reduced.

Dr G. Deed of Diabetes Australia was reported as saying “we may find there are certain viruses, that in certain people seem to predispose people to develop Diabetes - type 1. If this was found to be true, it would seem an easy step to producing a vaccine to kill those viruses, there may also be food problems which need research to find ways of reducing the risks.

Last year some research was carried out in Australia that the often recommended 30 minutes exercise per day is just not good enough for diabetes sufferers.

Brief bursts of exercise can’t undo hours sitting in front of a TV or Computer which in effects means physically inactive.

The well known International Diabetes Institute located in Melbourne made a study of approximately eight thousand people aged over 35 who were not diabetics. The conclusion was that 30 minutes per day is not sufficient to prevent the onset of diabetes and obesity amongst people who are physically inactive for much of the day. Those watching over three hours of TV per day were most at risk of developing the disease EVEN when they did 30 minutes of exercise per day.

The message was get off your rears, be active most of the day and exercise as well, EVERY day
